East Carolina University REU – Apply By March 1st

The Computer Science Department at East Carolina University will conduct a ten-week summer research program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for ten undergraduates from May 15, to July 21, 2017. The focus is on “Software Testing and Analytics,” We are searching for rising juniors or seniors from accredited undergraduate institutions who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to participate this summer NSF REU program to conduct research with Computer Science faculty members. Applicants should have a strong academic record and preferably a proficiency in Java programming. Underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply, as well as those from academic institutions with limited research opportunities. Each selected participant will receive a $5,000 stipend, a housing allowance, meals, and a travel reimbursement of up to $500 for non-ECU students. (All types of income are taxable).

Students will work on open research topics in software testing and analytics under the supervision of faculty mentors. They will participate in workshops on software testing and analytics, development of basic research skills, and application of scholarships and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate studies. We also will arrange field trips to visit our industry partners and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. The experiences and skills that participating students are able to obtain in this program will have practical applicability to research in their future studies.

We are grateful to the NSF and the Department of Computer Science, the College of Engineering and Technology, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and the Office of Undergraduate Research at ECU for providing support to this project.

The application deadline is March 1, 2017.

Qualifications

  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Major in Computer Science or related discipline
  • Incoming senior, or sophomore/junior with strong academic record
  • Students from underrepresented groups(women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) and academic institutions with limited research opportunities especially welcome

Financial Incentive

  • $5,000 stipend
  • Housing allowance and meals
  • Travel reimbursement of up to $500 for non-ECU students
  • All types of income are taxable.

Required Materials

  • Mail/email a copy of the transcript from your current institution to Dr. Junhua Ding. If you’re admitted for the summer program, you must have official transcripts from your current institution sent to Dr. Junhua Ding. These transcripts must be postmarked or electronically submitted on or before April 12, 2017.
